Actually, when I encounter someone on the street who supports the intelligence community's position, I'm pretty sure it's because they mistakenly believe that this is the majority position of the public at large.

I think a lot of people have abandoned analysis of the actual issues on their merits altogether, and are instead are operating on a more reflexive socialization impulse to go along with the perceived consensus.
