Wonderfully thoughtful piece from 's Nick Yeung on PhD students and publication! Makes me even more delighted to be part of this lab moving forward as a PhD student!

Beware causal inference with machine learning because the answer isn’t in the training data, and the algorithm can only learn what it sees.

(1/16) In my view, the root causes of the problems in biomedical science are (1) how we select who gets to have a faculty job, and (2) the change in the faculty job description, from being someone who brings new knowledge into the world, to being someone who obtains grant funding

Most researchers are insufficiently well-trained in methods and statistics to evaluate the merits of the papers that they cite so approvingly - assuming that they have even bothered to read past the title/press release/abstract.

I apparently have a bit of a reputation as someone who is anti-machine learning or anti-AI when it comes to human research. This is a bit of misrepresentation of my views, and (I'd argue) a misrepresentation of the issues "statistics people" take with AI/ML as a whole. (THREAD)

Just a reminder: descriptive tables do not need p-values!"Inferential measures such as standard errors and confidence intervals should not be used to describe the variability of characteristics, and significance tests should be avoided in descriptive tables"(STROBE)

This tweet, combined with being generally grumpy coming back to work after two weeks off, has inspired me to outline such a much-needed book: “Your Medical School Stats Class Was a Brutal Lie” (A thread, 1/19)

I know this is the time of year when faculty worry about teaching evaluations. Please don’t. I only use teaching evaluations against faculty I am targeting for other reasons. The actual score means so much less than my interpretation... And good evals won’t save you.

Many of us have! There is no shame in it...we have all made mistakes in the course of our learning. The only shame is continuing to do things poorly after you've been given the better alternatives and continue to ignore them.

How does feel about the idea of results blind peer review where papers are reviewed before study start and accepted based on importance of question and methods and published as long as authors do what they say they will do?

The results of my poll were pretty clear: from over 350 votes, 38% of you want to know about causal survival analysis. So, pull up a chair and let’s talk time-to-event!

I’m questioning meta-analyses these days. If there are differences in results they may be important to know (even if bias-related: don’t do that again). If results are same across studies what does a meta-analysis add? Talking about epi studies (big n’s). What am I missing?

What advice do you have for students who you teach new methods or ways of thinking and their bosses don’t like these new ways. How can they push back respectfully? For example, I find this comes up with not using pvalues.

Ugly scenes in the Cochrane Collaboration as Peter Gøtzsche is expelled and 4 board members resign in solidarity. Without taking sides (yet...), I am worried about the implications. Does Cochrane need help from its many friends? If so, just ask.
