        It's regular steel. Perhaps confused the bracing between columns with reinforcing steel in concrete.

        It is more spectacular to take down a cell tower of reinforced steel than a plain old steel cell tower.

        It was likely a poorly maintained guy wire that loosened and caused the tower to collapse. Or debris damaged a guy wire. - Ham Radio Op

        Civil Engineers design such to withstand winds up to a certain wind speed but not beyond. (Good.) Irma may exceed those values in FL (bad)

        would that be similar to using laminated wood beams like the ones in bridge construction? extreme heat can strengthen steel....

        So it is a cost/benefit metric. If standards say design for 140mph winds, then designing for 150mph winds costs more money than required.

        Yes. These are accounted for in the structural equations, but it can be joints (welds or bolts), but failure can be anywhere on the structur
