Then only the Steam version of their game would work? I would not ever take this approach because I want the game available on Humble, Itch, etc.

Also, to what degree is an OS doing its job if it seems reasonable to suggest that programs should all deploy using a 3rd party wrapper the job of which is to avoid significant amounts of the code the OS thinks it is providing?
