I think dll/so made more sense when computers had storage and ram that were measured in megabytes instead of gigabytes. sucks that we still end up stuck with the system

I think the culprits are high fragmentation among distros, and GNU's tendency to add hidden complexity for no good reason. Theoretically, a .so file is just a dictionary from symbols to text content, right? It's just that there are millions of lines of bad code surrounding them.

I feel like we should have moved past worrying about the idea of 'files' by now. We spend too much time on the irrelevant.
Linux is not only a desktop operating system, but is also being used in embedded systems where storage can be an issue. That being said, there could be distros that take a different approach to software packaging.
