Oh yea, I agree, I wish they had just used SPIR-V instead of inventing yet another shading lang. Also agree web needs to be language agnostic, which is why I’m glad WASM is taking off
I agree: They should allow cross compilation. The browser is too high level, which is why it sometimes gets things wrong across different vendor implementations. If the target (the DOM, JS, CSS) were low level (like WASM and WebGL or WebGPU), things would be more consistant.
The trouble is that the high level stuff has been shipped, and now it has to be maintained forever. I see WebGPU as a fix for the problems in WebGL, but, yes, it should accept compiled shaders. SPIR-V is already a standard that's like WASM for GPUs, so it should be used instead.
