I agree with the general sentiment of SF but I disagree with the idea that SF's decline bodes poorly for US future. Detroit was once the most prosperous city in the world and declined as the automotive industry spread. Same can go for other historical revolutions.

This diclinism of individual cities is nothing new (see: Rochester and Kodiak, Cleveland steel, etc.) As long as there as the country is not homogenously governed, there is chances for innovation in the country. I believe Texas' gaining two congressional seats indicates this.

How has SF declined? I only spent a couple days there in 2018, but it seemed fine-- what did I miss?

Maybe you were mostly in nice parts of town (which are fewer than ever?) It is famously nasty now.
