Wait what? Not many on the west coast venerate New York in any way. I lived there for a year, it was kinda gross, and pointless, I left.

Agreed people on the West Coast don't think New York matters. For a big chunk of America's history this is where the ambitious, smart, and creative left for, you can find depictions of this in 20th century media. New York has an out of date perception this is still the case.
