A thick platform can solve a lot of the heavy lifting problems in a standard-issue way. At best this relieves the next layer up (apps) of having to solve hard problems, and also allows the platform to solve collective action problems.

Worth considering that the contending alternative architecture is likely to be Mighty. Basically, thick edge, thin cloud ~vs~ thin edge, thick cloud.

I am still thinking about it all. Had assumed @Suhail was going to get crowned with laurels on Mighty launch, and the pushback has made me think again a little bit about edge vs near-edge vs vs distributed vs central cloud. The application space I am focussed on is built design.

In built design, no one gives a fk about DOM and it's all a universe of workarounds. @threejs by @mrdoob is a v kindly workaround, but still a workaround (obviates a plugin), but it's not WASM, and it leaves a payload problem (where and how to serve the file that 3js renders).

@HyparAEC is working magic in this space, but IMO will rapidly come up against an execution speed problem bc cloud-serve and pure browser-render will just hang too long to be a smooth exp. IMO Mighty (ie shell on cloud exec) won't be the path here, though yes on other uses.

Our speed problems are self inflicted. We render gltfs of arbitrarily large models on the server, then download them in the client. There's no reason a fully browser based geometry app can't be lightening fast. Computers are faster than most people understand.

yah I can't find his definitive take, but I think it's possibly aligned with what I feel here, which is that Might is optimtal for people that use browsers heavily for stuff that is for now stuck in a browser, like most webapps and workflows.https://twitter.com/Jonathan_Blow/status/1387101172230672389?s=20 …

So what we are observing is, since the Web started, it has become so much slower that a supercomputer would no longer be able to run it? Does that make sense to anyone? https://twitter.com/Suhail/status/1387063023521595394 …

Very hard to describe how embarrassing this is for everyone involved in the Web and, sort of, software more generally. https://mobile.twitter.com/Suhail/status/1387063023521595394 …

Yeah I read that but it's not exactly clear what the upshot is? Should no-one use it? Will it get used widely? Is it likely to be useful for some use cases but not others? All of those are possible even it's v embarassing per se?

I mean, I don’t care? That is a small potatoes question, and what is really necessary is for the adults in the room to get the kids to stop making such a mess.

People who actually understand computers and who see how far out of whack the current situation is from what it should be, and who care enough about the immense damage being done to want to mitigate that damage.
