SAT solvers are genuinely really cool, though people would usually be better off building more specialized solvers that use similar techniques. Of course, SAT is NP-complete. If your problem isn't in NP, a SAT solver is likely complete overkill.

I had to keep adding 0's to the number of rays per pixel in my depth of field/AA/motion-blurred/soft shadowed ray tracer benchmark to make it slow enough to get statistically valid data. Its ray intersection code just looped through a giant list of triangles and tested them all.

_years_ ago, I wrote a perl 68K asm language interpreter to see if it would be faster than a real one. It was, a lot. "Assembly" language: It was using regex's to parse asm instructions. The PC was an offset into a string. JMPing to a label was a search of the whole source text.
