Some of the defenses of this ("well, this is the situation we're in, so maybe it makes sense to cope with it") remind me of defenses of containers ("yeah, shipping software is a mess, so here's a temporary workaround for it"). It's not temporary, so you'll just make it worse.
My hope is that what makes this temporary is that it will not actually work better than most peoples' laptops. But yeah, overall it's just been an unceasing onslaught of making things worse.
Several popular mobile browsers in China already work like this. Google had a similar initiative internally, but I think it's been scrapped. It's a privacy nightmare.
Absolutely, I *hope* this will totally fail. Though given one of Chrome's distinguishing features originally was putting each tab in a process for better isolation, maybe what we need is a cloud product that puts every tab in its own VM.
They'll make it work, it is a golden opportunity to get between the user and their desktop and move it all into a walled garden.
