Looking on Netflix, every sci-fi show has the tag "Dystopian". I suspect there is a very big opportunity for a show-runner who can imagine stepping outside that mold.

Most stories (that sell) have an element of conflict, which works naturally with dysfunction. Writing stories without such background becomes very hard.

That's why every single story is dystopian, QED.

Undesirable, but yes, I think this is one of the reasons

I meant every single story in all of fiction is dystopian, because that is what your tweet proved.

Soviet fiction often prided itself on being hopeful and uplifting compared to American fiction which could only think of war and conflict :) But by 70s-80s a lot was dystopia disguised. E.g. brave earthlings fighting dystopia on a planet somewhere.

The two Russian Sci-Fi works that I remember reading offhand I would classify as both dystopian (Roadside Picnic and We) ... but Russians kind of have an excuse, so, okay.

Yup, and both are more-or-less from a time of disillusionment. Most others (can’t for the life of me remember the names even though I read a ton of sci-fi as a kid) were more about miscommunication, challenges in unknown worlds and culutres, or just “what if sci-fi but at home"

And now I realize I miss that kind of sci-fi, especially on TV. Someone said that Star Trek TNG was the last large series based on hope.
