Looking on Netflix, every sci-fi show has the tag "Dystopian". I suspect there is a very big opportunity for a show-runner who can imagine stepping outside that mold.

Character conflict is my first instinct, which leads my mind to a utopian sci-fi sitcom kind of show? I see how that’s a tough pitch. If I weren’t about to go bed I could devils advocate that many other genres have many dystopian elements but your point is that’s a crutch.

Star Trek TNG was utopian, yet not a sitcom. I'd love a new show in that style. Not more Star Trek though, it's been done to death. Something different.

I feel like most genres are inherently dystopian. Western, horror, murder mystery/crime procedural, vampire/zombie fantasy... even historical costume dramas are dystopian to the extent that the real world has been dystopian for most people for most of history.

Life is dystopian.

Wondering what you think about Disco Elysium? Light sci-fi/fantasy plus ordinary literature. No distopian I would say. I find it amazing
