I think a reason ppl often misuse the word “less” when the correct word to use is “fewer” (“I have less cats than I need”/“I have fewer cats than I need”) is bc they are both antonyms for the same word “more”—so “fewer” & “less” are indexed in part of the brain as interchangeable
It is because they are mathematically advanced -- mathematics starts discrete and then discovers the continuous within the discrete.
