There is value in a simple integer error code return from public C APIs, but it would be nice to have an easy way to get the full statement that forced the return, assert-style. INVALID_VALUE is not as helpful as it could be.

I hated bit field error codes -- the worst of both worlds; not human interpretable and limited information.
And I doubt the issuers of the errors would put effort into using them properly.

in golang errors are glorified strings which I think is more or less the right approach
