      Don't know such, but this is an interesting paper https://www.usenix.org/system/files/conference/hotos15/hotos15-paper-mcsherry.pdf … (TLDR many usecases for distributed systems are more cost-effective on better optimised single machines)

      Most of the time when people think they have “Big Data” it is something you could run on your laptop actually. Computers are very fast.

      I had a dream where @Jonathan_Blow, having just finished his new game, written solely in #Verilog and available as a bare #asics only was complaining about how no one really understood silicon any more, and there were too many layers between him and the intrinsic band gap.

      I think Jon's point has always been a) Yes, there is a tradeoff between convenience and performance b) People are making the wrong decisions because they systematically underestimate the cost of convenience. (i.e. the maintenance costs of distributed systems vs single) c) These

      d) They also overestimate the convenience they are actually getting, and are not interested in measuring it and in fact don't really have any idea how to measure it, so no cost/benefit analysis can actually be performed.
