People keep telling me Linux "just works" now. I bought a System76 laptop with PopOS preinstalled. On the first day of use, third time I wake it from suspend, the lock screen has gone crazy buggy ... there are many instances of it at different levels of slide-upness, covering

yep. "It-works-for-me" is a form of survivorship bias. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survivorship_bias …

I've had tons of issues too. It just has not been good for me as a personal development env. Sure, great, repeatable behavior for running web servers. But without commercial pressure, so many personal computing problems just never seem to get addressed.

in Linux terms it's "I use arch, btw" meaning "look how smart I am"

I actually agree with this. Anyone who says Linux "just works" in a desktop setting, has never used it that way or has some sort of special unicorn HW. It doesn't just work, it never has in the decade+ I've been using it.

On supported hardware it does work for me, admittedly when you get a shonky bit of HW sometimes you are bang out of luck, but still, it is and has been my daily driver for years now and it's been great to be honest!

Linux works for me because I work for it. Windows just works but it doesn't work for me.

PS I run Arch Linux and usually build on a Dell.

https://blog.burntsushi.net/system76-darter-archlinux/ … the "suspend" section of this post has some more information on what sounds like the similar issue: thunderbolt drivers are funny with wakeup (sorry if youve already found a solution) youre right, "just works" isnt the case yet, but its improving!
