People keep telling me Linux "just works" now. I bought a System76 laptop with PopOS preinstalled. On the first day of use, third time I wake it from suspend, the lock screen has gone crazy buggy ... there are many instances of it at different levels of slide-upness, covering

P.P.S. The number of condescending comments I get on postings like this, every time, is very large. If you are going to make a comment like this and are 20-something years old, don't even. In college I used to boot up my Linux machine with a big ascii Bob Dobbs every day.

If you make smug "Linux just perfectly works for me because I am so smart" comments, Bob thinks you are a pink. Thanks bye.

To put it another way: I agree with you completely about how terrible computers are, but I don’t believe there can be an all-purpose ‘good’ OS because the problems are mainly about irreconcilable social, economic and political interests, and I don’t think you can design them away

Strong disagree. It is not hard to picture things that are just like we have today but much, much better.

The thing is, Linux has "just worked" for me for years now... so... clearly there is truth to both sides... because, yes, I have also experience the opposite of "just works"... Though my experience with Linux has been far more successful than with Windows.

Sorry, no. I have used Linux since 1991. I have used it enough times in enough configurations that when people say stuff like this, it just reduces their credibility.

I've been running Elementary OS on my machine for the past few months, and I'm just riddled with bugs. I've lost count the number of times I've softlocked my computer because the mouse gets locked into a state where I can't click anything (and sometimes can't type anything).
-
Yep, that happened to me frequently with Mint as well. And they had the audacity to ship 4 versions of Mint and be all "choose what's best for you!" Hey buddy, what's best for me is not to softlock all the time, how about you focus on one version until you fix that.

The role of Linux IMO is to be the operating system where there is no financial incentive for either first or third parties to mess it up with bad updates, adware, or other shit

The Linux people I've talked to seem to be so invested in the ideological superiority of the platform that they vastly underestimate the UX and polish gap between them and proprietary OSes. It's hard to find enough common ground to even discuss these issues.
