I am very curious - as a game programmer, you want all the performance the HW can give you, but a lot of complexity (at the hw level) is in the name of performance (OoO, superscalar, etc.) Would you rather have a simple scalar in-order core even in the domain of video games?

If you correctly redesigned computers based on what we know today, they would be faster than what we have, and also a lot simpler.

BTW, regarding difficulty of understanding processor for optimizing you mentioned on that podcast, you should talk to Fabian about it sometime, I lamented about this to him at lunch once and he's like "nah, it's totally tractable to understand most of the time".

A great step forward would be a tool to visualize the guts of a CPU core. As in, pass an executable into a program that allows you to see, step by step, how an OOO CPU executes your code, how the cache, branch predictor, prefetcher, etc. all influence performance, and even how

data gets laid out in memory. It would be a great way for programmers to see not only how their CPUs work, but also how incredibly poorly their code utilizes it. It's one thing to write slow code. It would be another thing entirely to WATCH your code sit and stall on a cache miss
