This is like saying plumbing is bullshit because only 0.01% of plumbers know fluid physics

In your analogy, that's like saying that plumbers don't know if they are using a copper pipe or a plastic pipe, don't know the differences or don't care.

It's not at all like that. I'm saying there's a difference between science and practice

Knowing the difference between copper and plastic piping is a practical skill, but knowing the difference in weight between hot water and cold water is a scientific skill. For some jobs, maybe you'll need that, but if someone wants you to unclog their toilet you don't

Yes, but most programmers don't know the basic practical facts. They simply write a program "connect all the pipes", and they don't even know if those pipes are plastic or copper.

I just wanted to make a toilet joke, the actual concept of plumbing is beside the point

To address the comment though, programmers write programs to run on a variety of hardware with no knowledge of the underlying mechanisms. The, uh, "plumbing" is abstracted away by the operating system. This is a feature, not a bug

This is also a "feature" of electron, and weak types is a "feature" of javascript. Doesn't mean that it's good.

Actually it is a good thing. Read up on what game development was like in a pre-DirectX era and you'll realize sometimes not dealing with things at the lowest level is optimal

Back when games drew pixels to the screen directly, they were much more robust and worked consistently for a much higher percentage of players.

A much higher percentage of players *that had the specific hardware they were written for. Fixed that for you ;)

This. Requiring users to edit autoexec.bat files and know EMS vs XMS was a huge barrier of entry. Thus games worked for the people technical enough to learn these concepts. No way the same number of people could run games from the 80s out of the box as now.
