Only a tiny minority of professional programmers have a clear picture in their minds of how fast modern computers are. 99.9% have next to no idea. How does this affect software that is even conceived? (Ignoring, for a moment, what is actually built, which we know is very slow).

They'd have to learn how to do all the things computers automatically do now, such as memory management, learn how the lower level of computing works, etc. It would take a lot more work just to learn everything they don't know.

I would know. I'm one of those web guys who's trying to learn what he doesn't know about low level programming. I've spent a month's worth of nights and weekends so far just re-learning C and Pointers.
