Neural networks like autocorrect are not programmed, they are trained. Anything can come out of them. This deep learning fad is going to hurt us (in our autopiloted cars, e.g.)
They could at least put checks on the output that say stuff like "am I changing is to isn't" or "am I turning were into we're".

Agreed. But those quality checks will never cover everything. Catching some, but not all, could even be considered worse, as it gives you even more sense of a false security.
