I'm not happy with the new layout. It makes me much less inclined to use Twitter.https://www.wired.com/story/twitter-website-redesign/ …

Real journalism would ask questions, like, why did it take you 6-18 months to do basically nothing except adjust spacing in an obviously negative way?

The fact that nobody even remarks upon this kind of thing, in fact everyone expects it, is a sign of how crazy bad productivity is in our “tech” companies and yet nobody sees this. It is straight-up crazy.

Very low productivity seems to be a surprising fact of the contemporary economy as a whole. Job descriptions and perceptions have in the service of patronage taken on a life of their own, quite divorced from actual production.

If I were to numerically estimate the productivity of the average Twitter engineer, it is something like 1/1000th of a reasonable level. It’s crazy, and way beyond what I would have previously classed as “low productivity”.

How many engineers did it take to build your games, Jonathan?

Depends which game you mean. Between 1 and 4.

Sounds like you’ve got some 10x engineers on your hands 😂Seriously though, I’m always impressed how much indie game designers are able to do. Making a Twitter clone is literally a homework assignment in an intro web development class. What could all those other coders be doing?

You probably have to consider how much technical debt they've piled up over the years. Also product mgmt and design by committee, presumably. I don't know anything about Twitter org in particular, but this explains the general effects we see

Paying down technical debt is part of productivity.

Ya the cost grows exponentially over years as people churn. Someone writes something, leaves, and now you need 2 people to figure it out. Rinse repeat

A tech org with high churn (or, any tech org over sufficient time) needs to completely rebuild or get lost in an endless pit. Probably true for all institutions, Samo? 😏

And worst, Twitter had been ultra restrictive about it's API use for 3rd parties.http://apps-of-a-feather.com/
