Of course every service has their own Terms of Service, and they are all different, and they have people of different temperaments (and different levels of giving an F) enforcing them. Maybe we need a broad legal standard, like First Sale Doctrine, but about hosting data.

(A shop can’t decide to un-sell you the book you bought last month because someone on the internet is upset. But if you are paying for the service of being able to read the book, they can. I think people are severely underestimating the effects of this on our everyday freedom).

People are too reliant on cloud services. They should be your backup, not your platform.

This is so spot on. While I do use github's service (and other similar services, the worst being gmail), I'm actually planning on hosting my own stuff. That's why I keep local backups of everything that's at least a bit important.

There's a GIF of that? Brilliant.

I think most people fail to realize that git is not github, you can host your own git server at home obviously have backup for the backups especially when is your life's work. This applies to any important file, never rely on one single point of failure.
-
the problem is, in my opinion, that this is why one want to use a service like github: not to deal with backups and maintenance of your own hardware. That is what they advertise: not having to worry. But apparently one should be *very* worried...
-
Firstly, most people on GitHub do not pay anything at all for their service. There are millions of projects on GitHub that things like this happen should surprise nobody, it is simply bound to happen at this scale. I have beeing using GitHub since 2013 and I haven't had...
-
...any problems yet, and I bet most people have had a pretty good time on GitHub. Either way, it is obviously unaceptable nonetheless but to take this as a reason to crucify every cloud service is idiotic...

This is why i still use a bunch of external hard drives with multiple backups. Damn.

Or, you could get creative, simply create an account for GitHub, BitBucket, and GitLab and push your repo to all of them. If you use the free tiers, you basically get 3 independent "backups" of your data for nothing. Or, you go through the trouble of maintaing your own servers.

He's being cheeky, when he made that tweet his project had already been reinstated trough the usual support system. You're right but I bet he had local backups, I have them and I'm just a hobbyist.

Where's the acceptable line, though? Managed VMs? Managed rack? Someone's going to be taking care of your stuff... Not a counterpoint, honest question.

This is one of the reasons why I prefer to buy PS4 games in disk vs digital. Maintaining old software is a big burden. I’m not sure what is on Sony’s mind a few years from now. On the other hand, it seems devs get less commission from my purchases because of all the extra parties
