Hacker News upset that Google is going to turn off ad blocking: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20044430 … Few mention complexity of the web; nobody points out that if it weren’t so insanely complicated, it wouldn’t require a huge industrial effort to build a browser, so there would be no problem.

I will certainly agree that it *should not* be as complicated as it is to draw stuff on the screen, but given the current playing field, problems are being had.

Having one bad experience with a FOSS product which works perfectly fine for tens of millions of users and writing it off as "not the solution" piece of garbage software is pretty ridiculous mentality too, no?
-
Look at other replies to the original tweet to see other people talking about problems with Firefox.
-
You'll also see plenty from people who had no problems with it whatsoever. Again, this is a product that Just Works for tens of millions of mostly non-tech-savvy users.
-
There is a discussion to be had here about areas to improve, but cherry picking anecdata to support your singular bad experience (or either way) and extrapolating that to how it's hopelessly bad software just seems intelectually dishonest.
-
it's not about Firefox or one particular software. This lack of attention to the performance for it has not caused any "major problems" has become a trend, and the slowness adds up. Softwares today are so slow because people like you are denying the value of it.
-
? That's a straw man. Web is overcomplicated and software bloats and rots too easily. But it's hard to engage with the big picture ideas seriously when an example used to reinforce them states that FF is awful software because it lagged that one time and Chrome didn't.

anectodally I had the opposite experience, and switched to firefox because of performance problems in chrome... but then again, chromium is also open source, so maybe you have a point

I'm using FF *and* Chrome, FF works very well. What you describe sounds unusual. (I'm pretty far from an OSS advocate/fanatic and whatnot).

Apologies for adding to the people addressing the side thing instead of the main point, but I’m surprised by this. Not that this would make it not a problem, but is it possible that it was interacting poorly with the livestreaming?
