Hacker News upset that Google is going to turn off ad blocking: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20044430 … Few mention complexity of the web; nobody points out that if it weren’t so insanely complicated, it wouldn’t require a huge industrial effort to build a browser, so there would be no problem.

(I think it is bad to turn off ad blocking, and if this happens it will result in me using the web much less than I do today ... which is probably good in the end. But if you are going to solve the problem, solve the problem.)

(If you are one of these Maoist Che Chavismo “we must destroy capitalism” types, probably the best thing you can do is figure out how to simplify software, so that anyone besides Google is capable of making software 20 years from now.)

(When I tried Firefox some months ago, it couldn’t even scroll a web page without lagging very hard, so I am not sure why anyone thinks this is going to be a solution).

We need a "browser" that _only_ renders markdown. Nothing else. That would be great for 90% of my real "web" use. Then we can rename web browsers as "shopping/entertainment" clients as that is what they are for.

Figuring out how to simplify software is hard enough, but the real trick is to do it in a way that causes anyone to care that you've done it. It's actually relatively easy to create a simple browser, much harder to make one that finds a relevant place in the ecosystem.

Maybe the real solution is to get back to the essentials, and evaluate where in between we (as humanity) fucked it up. But wait, can't do that, we never break the web #ohtheirony

And by that I also mean... why don't we have <script type=polyfill for=window.whatever>? The more up-to-date my browser is and the more features it has, the more code it has to load over the network? By what logic is that reasonable?

Idk if you know about this, but the people over at Suckless are making a simpler browser called surf: https://surf.suckless.org/ . The Suckless organization in general aims to make software less bloated.

Definitely! I am learning low level programming and hope to contribute to these sorts of efforts. Talks by yourself and Casey have been influential (in addition to the Witness itself!) It will remain a hobby for the near future though I have much hobby time right now
