If I want to play videos from within a program (I don't care much about format), should I use Theora or an mp4 library (any recommendations?) We used Bink in The Witness, but I am looking for something I can redistribute for free.

Like, all of this should just not even be an issue, and it's a little bit sad to me that we live in a world where many people don't even know what I mean when I say this stuff.
Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

I can see your point. I guess a majority of video playback systems try to be versatile, an “all-in-one” solution rather than trying to address a specific application for it. Video playback is a special kind of hell :)

It's not even about a specific application. People just want to play a video.

"Specific application" is an excuse. It is overcomplicated for no good reason, except that people designing this stuff are doing a bad job. I can't mince words about it. They're ensconced in a culture of how to do it that is bad, so all new attempts are bad too.

fair point. I guess their hunt is always for faster and better compression rather than simplified usage.
