Saw your recent talk. great larger point. wouldn't the path on the smaller point of dev frustration be to use a custom os/env to simplify dev and then compile target windows? like Carmack did with nextstep. solve 80% of it just not working full time in windows. ps: osx is simpler

Sure, and I would be happy to help fund such a thing. But making an OS is a big step in which you have to overcome a lot of friction, and there are other things that can get a lot done that may be more tractable.

That's an installer, it is just hiding the fact that it's an installer.

It's a styled Finder window with an alias to the Applications folder, but, okay.

I've used Macs professionally and Lawrence is right. Many (not all) applications are in fact self contained apps (which are just folders with executable + Metadata + resources)

I just downloaded Braid from Humble and correct me if I'm wrong but it doesn't seem to install anything. It just runs the launcher and subsequently the actual game when I run the executables contained in the app.pic.twitter.com/39Hwa0j1zL

It is certainly possible to do things more cleanly on MacOS than on Windows. My point was that the "drag to Applications folder" is not a bare copy; it runs installers if present. (You can get away without them for now; you can do that on Windows too, it's just much harder,

and starts to become impossible depending on what you link with. MacOS is going down that same road, it was just cleaner for longer).

The basic installation for MacOS is pretty simple, and configuration files are stored reliably in the Preferences plists, or Application Support. However, .pkg installers are considerably more complex, and register kernel extensions and other stuff. Uninstalling those is painful
