If I want to play videos from within a program (I don't care much about format), should I use Theora or an mp4 library (any recommendations?) We used Bink in The Witness, but I am looking for something I can redistribute for free.

Well, if you're truly interested, it would a fun project to implement a stb-style lib for MPEG1/MP2 playback. Let me know.

FWIW you're unlikely to see a video player library from me because I worry about stepping on my employer's toes, but of course I'd love to see it happen anyway in practice!

@cmuratori I am *very* tempted to just take a weekend sometime and make a not-very-efficient-yet format that is just lz4 on the audio and video, in the simplest file format. Then it's just improving compression to something reasonable at leisure. -
Mocomp is pretty important unfortunately, so I don't know how well LZ4 would work as a baseline...
-
Is it possible to write an audio/video codec from scratch that wouldn't infringe on any patents that's somewhat good enough quality to, let's say, be used in games? And MIT licensed?
-
The problem is that it doesn't matter whether or not you infringe anything, you still need an army of lawyers to defend against those who claim that you do.
