    1. Person says something profoundly repugnant. 2. Popular magazine immediately hires the person, saying "we need their unique perspective." 3. Public warns the publication this is stupid. 4. Person says the thing again. 5. Publication fires the person. How is this so routine?

Kevin Williamson has been fired from The Atlantic. From Jeffrey Goldberg's letter to staff: "The language he used in this podcast—and in my conversations with him in recent days—made it clear that the original tweet did, in fact, represent his carefully considered views."

Bernie Sanders dismissing Barack Obama as nothing more than a "charismatic leader" on the 50th anniversary of King's assassination is perhaps the most Bernie Sanders thing Bernie Sanders has ever said.

Shot and killed for holding...a shower head. A shower head. Don’t you dare congratulate yourself for putting up an MLK quote today. Do something. Cause we’re still dying. In a country we built. For free.

If 2001 were released today, literalist Twitter would’ve tanked it, and thousands of film bros would be harassing Stanley Kubrick any way they could.

It’s been clear these guys were shady for years, but seeing it all put together in one article is undeniably horrifying and disheartening. One of the many cancerous sites of film criticism also fueled by misogyny, abuse, toxic masculinity. Horrible.

The narrative of The Marginalized Conservative has got to stop. They control all three branches of government, have consolidated single-party rule in numerous state legislatures, literally control the media script, and yet still claim to be an oppressed minority. Just stop it.

My college experience in one anecdote: i said “take guns away from domestic abusers. That means almost half of police force” My professor &classmates were like “WOAH cite yourself that sounds widely inaccurate” then someone looked up the statistics & they were all like “oh”

The video series has been doing on The Hobbit is far and away the best critical deconstruction of these films so far, and I say that as someone who grappled mightily with how the hell to talk about them as they were coming out. I'm in awe of what she's done here.

Spielberg has always been a much weirder, cleverer, more sophisticated director than his smiley-faced approach would suggest.

The very simple, patently obvious truth about Donald Trump - that he is a *tremendously* stupid individual - just isn’t said enough, plainly enough, in our current discourse. He is one of the most breathtakingly dumb people to ever be in public life.

And the reveal of Artemis’ “deformity” (a minor birthmark that doesn’t stop Olivia Cooke from looking like Olivia Cooke) is very dumb and tone-deaf. Luckily the character (and more importantly, the performance) is more than that.

A few more issues: The two Asian characters in the main cast really get shunted to the side and are used mainly as window dressing and that’s problematic.

One more thought: If Steven Spielberg can’t make people in VR headsets look anything other than stupid and dorky, nobody ever will, and that is the reason VR (in goofy headset form, at least) will never catch on.
