Pinker hates Nietzsche and chose to end his book on the enlightenment by viciously attacking him because only Nietzsche can see through what he’s doing: trying to reintroduce Christian morality in secular discourse (also why Pinker likes Kant).

Of course, there are plenty of tools for experimenting with moving yourself in a direction. Caffeine, hot and cold showers, fasting, meditation, etc. Remember the feeling of waking up and rocketing out of bed, or working so hard that you sleep like a rock. Aim for that.

Try to clarify your time to yourself. Are you pushing or relaxing? One of the reason weightlifting is great is that it pushes people into this frame. Ditto for martial arts. Strategy games can teach the lesson cognitively. Attritional warfare is generally bad.

Tv and video games are not relaxation. They keep your mind active - and are unlikely to help people to relax once done with them. Similarly, a lot of work isn't really work. Just a shitty distraction meant to justify your time to yourself or other people.

Nietzsche describes the responsibility of the nobility as war and leisure. Extreme action, extreme integration/exploration. The modern world pushes people away from these extremes and towards stagnant states. Worn down, not working hard but somehow still working too much.

Not that the floppy ideologies are any better. We all know intensity is often called for. But there are a lot of ways to avoid this fact, and a lot of people who will help you via constant reassurance and isolation from difficulty. Every gilded cage breaks eventually.

Knowledge of this particular Dao has left me a bit disdainful of certain disciplinarian ideologies. You will burn yourself out held in a high energy state. Your system will wear down. You won't be able to push past a local maximum of intensity.

Being stuck in a halfway state 'neither hot nor cold' is the worst. Not relaxed, not pushing. Sitting in that state grinds you down while also not getting anything done. It's the basic physical posture of the nerd. Not relaxed and not striving. Stuck in an in-between.

If you want to get to one state, try going through the other. Let yourself be frustrated. Push through the problem. Conversely, try not grinding on a problem, relaxing, doing nothing (thinking counts) and 'let the right action arise within yourself'

It's taken me a long time to understand how to really expand my variation between high and low energy states, in my body and in my thinking. But my god is it glorious. Here are some tips.

Some invisible line was crossed and the tiger launched itself maybe ten feet almost vertically into the air and grabbed the meat. The movement between a supreme resting state and spontaneous action was extraordinary and deeply enviable.

Laying in its enclosure, it was maybe the most relaxed being ten-year-old me had ever seen. Truly it was magnificent. Meat was being lowered towards it on a hook. The tiger fixed that meat with cool, subtle intention. The smooth loading of a mental spring.

Real power is the distance between your stable highest and lowest energy states, and the ease of moving between them. This is a lesson I learned from a tiger.

If you like, comment with your opinions about Nietzsche. I'll happily refute them, if they deserve to be refuted.

But I've always felt that a lot of the criticism is deeply ill-intentioned. When people try to criticize things which are powerful and beautiful, examine their motives. It's rarely pretty.
