Some sense checking: ONS life expectancy projections for the UK compared with observed life expectancy (black line). Six years of likely over-projection compared with decades of under-projection

In the UK system where numerous grants employ only one researcher on short fixed term contracts and the statistician CI is only costed in at 2.5% of their time, it will be very rare to have somebody review the code.

Does anyone have any data (or anecdata) on roughly what proportion of Scottish on-trade spirits are sold in 35ml vs. 25ml measures? As far as I can tell, the Scottish Health Survey assumes it's all 25ml, which seems like quite a strong assumption.

is back tonight on BBC 2 A genius show with only one personal drawback - * I never know if I'm going to laugh * Be frightened * Cry * Be on the edge of my seat or * Emotionally wrecked for the days that follow with such internal turmoil that I'm scarred for life

1/4 I came to the UK as a postgrad in 1998 - so easy with Freedom of Movement and mutual recognition of credits. I ran a great Erasmus Mundus Masters that’s changed so many people’s lives. My research was enriched by two Horizon2020 grants. But that’s just the career side...

Is there anything funnier than hearing a young man who’s probably been through Eton say ‘mate’* repeatedly? *except in the context of narrating a BBC natural history documentary, as that’s their natural habitat

No 10 Downing Street are hosting a Brexit party tonight apparently serving classic British dishes like Ploughman's lunch. Brits only see this dish as a mid-tier entry in the genre - they'd be better off serving yorkshire puds, crumpets and bacon sarnies

I sometimes use x %>% write.csv("clipboard") to paste stuff from R into Excel and I'm only moderately ashamed to admit this!

This is a cool study, linking SES to harm outcomes and looking at common sequences of harms across the lifecourse in lower SES groups. They found a common pathway from mental health -> self harm -> substance abuse disorders (inc. alcohol) -> liver disease

Data.table was clearly the natural evolution of Base R, concise but cryptic. But the momentum's been for tidyverse instead, verbose but more transparent. At this stage I think I'd only switch to data.table if I had ideas above my station in terms of R expertise. :)

Is there an established name for the mirror of Imposter Syndrome? I've referred to it as Struggling Artist Syndrome before ("They don't appreciate my genius now. But maybe they'll realise it when I'm dead") but there must be other terms for it.

See also Glasgow's West End 'Bubble': It's actually wedge-shaped, marked by the Clyde on the south and Maryhill on the north. (I live on a frontier: dark blue adjacent to dark red)
