Main cost was always repatriation. Compared to APD it´ll be negligible. In fact APD could easily fund it

As I understand it if you (say) need antibiotics in the hospital you can't be charged more than a "local". So if a Spaniard has to pay e100 for a doctor visit you can't be charged more. But nonEU can be charged more than "locals". Thus the potential bill to insurers goes up.

Prescriptions for everyday items are not the issue. Inpatient stay and emergency surgery are the issue.

Yeah (although if you have a chronic condition like hypothyroidism, epilepsy, or diabetes the prescription charges can mount up. But afaik the same (parity with locals) applies for emergency and inpatient costs.

Youd be exempted from UK prescriptions anyway, what medications do you think you´d suddenly need on a short trip? By their nature, chronic illnesses are managed electively.

Well if you worked abroad? Though I confess I don't quite know how the system works when you move to the EU. But for emergency stuff (say broken leg) you/your insurer has only to pay the same as locals, which lowers the potential cost to them and thus the premiums to you.

it really is member state specific so would depend on their rules re: social insurance if you moved there to work. Also if the closest hospital is NOT government owned or run it wont accept ehic usually. Hence insurance essential for full range of options.

Obvs it would depend on how each member structures it's healthcare provision. But are you saying that there would not be the scope for EU members to charge nonEU (i.e. UK) more than EU citizens? Do they not charge more already? Pretty sure UK does.

NHS is state run and populist hence the 150% surcharge. I personally find it unethical. Most EU countries dont have state run healthcare pricing.

Humm... I find it very hard to believe there will be zero impact to EHIC (or more accurately UK becoming 3rd party) but this is a bit out of my area so I'll have to ultimately defer and keep my fingers crossed you are right.

There may be. There needn't be.
