Youd be exempted from UK prescriptions anyway, what medications do you think you´d suddenly need on a short trip? By their nature, chronic illnesses are managed electively.

Well if you worked abroad? Though I confess I don't quite know how the system works when you move to the EU. But for emergency stuff (say broken leg) you/your insurer has only to pay the same as locals, which lowers the potential cost to them and thus the premiums to you.

it really is member state specific so would depend on their rules re: social insurance if you moved there to work. Also if the closest hospital is NOT government owned or run it wont accept ehic usually. Hence insurance essential for full range of options.
