Admin costs are the same. Pharmacy still bills someone for processing the script. I'm neutral on free prescriptions. It's a pittance anyway

I agree with Jonathan: cost neutral. So my take is: why not, you know, employ some pharmacists if it effectively costs nothing? Also: there are limits. I know 2 GPS. Both regularly have people need paracetamol. They ask for prescription rather than paying 20p in Tesco

That's a ridiculous state of affairs, and I'd be interested to see some figures on how prescriptions are being used now, as opposed to when they were charged. I suspect, like tax changes, that behaviour has changed, and it's now costing more.

Billing by individual is much more expensive and time-consuming. Germany does it, and it gets in the way.

Admin costs were the same as the income received. It was cost-neutral at the point the free prescriptions were implemented. Might not be now due to changed behaviours.
