The difference is that those coalitions were FPTP, not the same voters voting twice.

It's the system. We don't have to like it. But that is the electoral system of the parliament and the UK govt put it there. Holyrood has no mandate except that given by years of antiindyref campaigning. We never had to be here, but Tories put us here.
