So do it off island, in a way that does not compromise UK integrity. Or the UK can just pack up and ditch the NIP with no solution. This is an EU matter. Their law can deal with it perfectly well. They may not want to, but they can. Article 349 is the legal process for it.

For health matters (SPS), fine, the island of Ireland is a single epidemiological unit, I think everyone understands that and would support *proportionate* measures. But why else should anyone tolerate a hard border? What for? Rules of origin? Seriously?

Exactly. The pandemic has shown the Common Travel Area is also very much a single epidemiological unit for people. EU approach has been even worse than the UK's and that's saying something. Truth is, the EU does not respect their own principle of subsidiarity.
