In 19th century, mild ale, basically meant just ale, so the lowest abv beer that Bass brewed in the later 19th century was IPA! (Same abv as X ale, but most milds higher)

WWI changed British brewing utterly- brewers weakened their mild (aka cheap beer) and kept their pale ales (aka expensive beer) about the same. Also used dark malts on their mild too. Driven by govt regulations.

During WWII, hop access was an issue, all of a sudden no US imported hops, hopping rates for all beers including mild really dropped along with gravity.
