I see people are musing again that Spain would block Scotland joining the EU "because of Catalonia". 1. This thinking comes from the fact that incumbent pro-UK MSPs are from lazy parties and therefore make stupid comments out of unconcious ignorance.

2. Spain is the realm of the Spanish Crown. That's all it is. That is what defines it. There is no scope for any part of Spain to cede, nor is there for any US state. Wars have been fought over this. It's important.

3. Spain is a former colonial power with limited reach and sees the EU as its way back into the club. It favours EU expansion so long as the member states remain whole. As long as Spain is Spain, it wants the EU to grow. Four decades of history confirms this.

I agree. I do not think it would be politically sustainable for an EU member state to perpetually block Scotland's entry to the EU. However, they will demand Scotland meets the EU accession criteria that they themselves have sacrificed to meet.

It would be sustainable, just not credible. Accession criteria are an excuse to keep countries OUT before they're ready, not to let them IN. EUCO can let Scotland in if it decides to. The prize of hobbling the UK would be huge.

Yes the EU can be flexible when it desires. However, which of the main accession criteria do you think the EU will let Scotland off with?

None, it'll impose and give a transition period for breathing space to soften up voters. Everything downstream is a marketing exercise. Tories did it for decades.
