I see people are musing again that Spain would block Scotland joining the EU "because of Catalonia". 1. This thinking comes from the fact that incumbent pro-UK MSPs are from lazy parties and therefore make stupid comments out of unconcious ignorance.

2. Spain is the realm of the Spanish Crown. That's all it is. That is what defines it. There is no scope for any part of Spain to cede, nor is there for any US state. Wars have been fought over this. It's important.

3. Spain is a former colonial power with limited reach and sees the EU as its way back into the club. It favours EU expansion so long as the member states remain whole. As long as Spain is Spain, it wants the EU to grow. Four decades of history confirms this.

The problem with European History isn't the last for or five decades, its the last four or five centuries. All over Europe, there are national, sectarian and racial differences that could bubble up again and were not clever enough to know when or how to stop them.

Sure but end of the Cold War is pretty much given as a separate and current chapter in our history. Full of precedents. We can never say with certainty how Spain will behave but past performance is a good indicator. They've been very consistent. Consolidate Spain, Expand Europe
