FT is reporting that Whitehall figures are concerned that reneging on an international treaty (signed less than a year ago with the EU) would set a dangerous precedent in terms of trying to secure new trade deals with others.

Yes so why do it? Because they need a ruse to capitulate This way the UK "unfortunately" ends up as a whole where NI is now. No trade deals, orbiting the EU, until someone takes us back in because the Tories can't do that. This is Boris buckling. No other reason to do it.
