Our Emergency Legislation will include provisions to hold Solemn trials without a jury. An unprecedented measure, but made the judgement that it is needed in these extraordinary times. We cannot have accussed held in remand indefinitely awaiting trial. Also cannot have victims

Humza, with respect I'm deeply, deeply uncomfortable with this proposal, as somebody with significant experience in the area, it is counter to some of the absolute cornerstones of our legal system. I'm presuming there were other contingencies discussed too? Can you elaborate?

I understand discomfort. In normal times I wouldn't even contemplate such a move. Contingencies have been explored but at this stage cannot see an alternative if we want Solemn trials to proceed. Open to suggestions & will approach constructively with opposition

you just postpone the trials. That's it. If the defendent does not need remand, then they just wait for their trial. That's it.

It's not that simple. Say all April's trials are delayed to Sept, then Sept's trials are delayed to Feb & so on. There are only so many courts & judicial staff available.

true but very doable without any power grabs. SNP like power grabs.

If the SNP just delay trials indefinitely & cause a massive back up the LDs, Labour & Tories will be the ones using it as a political baseball bat. But you knew that. You don't have to like them to see that this will be used negatively. Oh the virus was 6months ago, a year ago...

Hardly indefinitely. Trials can be postponed months and often are, whether for evidence, or mental health assessment. Acting paranoid won't help anyone's cause. Trials can be postponed. Far better than abolishing trial by jury.

Yes, the odd few can. But you clearly are ignoring the sheer volume of trials involved. It's not as simple as delaying them all and not expecting it to have a massive knock on effect. But clearly we will just have to agree to disagree.
