What I find odd about the "just let covid-19 do its thing and protect the economy" is, parking my other objections to it...have people *seen* the economy after, e.g. Spanish flu?

Let's go out for dinner and celebrate there only being a major likelihood of catching it! We can forgot the collapse of our health care system and while we're at it we'll book that holiday!

yes, people *are* the economy. Human life is highly valuable. That said, I think there is a legitimate case to ask, in anything after, say, 2 months: is a lockdown the most cost-effective way of saving lives?

Yes - after this phase (the next month when we find out if our health system collapses) there will have to be a robust debate about what a better response looks like for phase 2. But some people want to move on this now, which sounds mad and extremely high risk.

You can keep the economy running for 5/6 people and tell the 1/6 to remain isolated, reserve shopping on Monday for the vulnerable, after a weekend has allowed the virus to die off in shops.
