Should IRA bombers who killed people never be prosecuted for their atrocities?

If new evidence emerges they should be prosecuted. Those released under GFA had already been prosecuted. But noone has ever been prosecuted for bloody Sunday. Is that fair?

In fact the Hyde Park bomber was not prosecuted. The issue with Northern Ireland is that the same rules need to apply to both sides.

One responsible was jailed, one wasn't because of a legal screw up. The rules were never equal though. Thousands of IRA/Loyalists combatants were convicted during the Troubles, only 3 UK soldiers were for murder, and they were freed and rejoined the army.

The same legal precedent set by the Hyde Park bomber should apply to soldiers. As much as you want to go after elderly veterans the law should apply equally. That is all.

That wasn't a legal precedent it was a highly specific legal screw up. There has been no equal application of the law because almost *all* murders committed by UK Forces have gone unpunished

I want to 'go after' elderly veterans if they've been proven to have killed innocent civilians. I don't understand why that is unacceptable to you.

It was a nasty conflict and some very bad people have escaped justice but for all sides to accept peace the law has to apply equally. I have no problem with people being made to answer for their crimes but it has been established that not doing so is part of the cost of peace.

That simple. Consistency in the spirit of the application of law.

But the law clearly hasnt been applied evenly given the lack of convictions. These veterans could be murderers, don't the victims deserve some form of justice, even in the form of acknowledgement

My personal view? Soldiers on deployment answer only to the Crown. Any transgression has to be taken up with the Crown as the defendant. Not individual soliders who would have been court martialed at the time if their behaviour was outwith military operations.
