exercise has to be undertaken to determine which interest should prevail in particular circumstances, or an attempt must be made to find a solution which accommodates both sets of interests. This is the standard approach that is taken in other cases of conflicting rights and 3/

it is baffling to me that in this one case to expect this approach to be adopted leads to people being labelled as bigots, no platformed and threatened with violence. 4/4

Because the tone of the debate was angry and defensive on both sides long before we got to that point you have described. Too few have acknowledged the degree to which their position feels like an attack on the fundamental rights of the other.

It’s not a surprise. On the one hand we have women who correctly feel that every freedom is hard won and will be ditched at a moments notice. And on the other a minority who has seen every group in the same situation before them fight for their rights every step of the way.

Why anyone thought that would be resolved with pithy slogans like human rights are trans rights is beyond me.

What I am clear on is that elected representatives on both sides have done the argument no favours. They aren’t the only ones but they are the legislators and if the debate is going to be toned down, they will need to lead and we will all have to bite our tongues and listen.

This isn't really about the GRA though. Most of the issues that are continually raised aren't covered. In the last WM session there was a report recommending a code of practice on the Equality Act exclusions but who knows what will come of that. I speculate they will avoid it.

What is seems to be about is a multiplicity of rallying cries ahead of 2021 elections, and a wilful disregard to treating the issue carefully, using emotive and provocative language. But that’s how we’ve been talking about it online for 5 years, so sure, why change now.

Absolutely 100pc not. If this is not done by the 2021 election It will be even more of a nightmare. It's a wedge issue for sure but not one political parties will want to use against each other.
