The very opposite is the case.
The rest of the EU looks at his tactics and goes
"Why should we give a man who has suspended Parliament for 5 weeks what he wants?"
Other EU leaders would lose *more* face now by doing that than 5 weeks ago.https://twitter.com/SamCoatesSky/status/1167387196434911232 …

rather this not be about just losing or saving face from either side at all @ such late stage. the counterfactual will damage both enough, economically and politically (not least by having to deal w/consequences for a while and distract from other more system ones that need attn)

I sympathise with your point, Allie, but in negotiations how you anger or please the other side matters. Saying you're winning them over, when you're actually losing, is the most foolish route of all.

the outcome also matters most, I think even the EU managed to not (over)react to Varoufakis + co throwing a strop and walking out of the negotiating room....as i say, rather it not being about pride for anyone, v much including our own PM, when outcome cd be so costly

The EU, just about, is still keeping calm - and simply saying to the UK please just explain how to remove the backstop if that's what you want. The EU is, all things considered, still quite calm and clear headed.

The EU keeps calm. That's its sole real purpose in Europe. To maintain a calm brave face and be disinterested and only achieve what matters long term. If it can't do that....
