@PeterKGeoghegan this (and yesterday’s debacle on the rugby pitch) is why Irish people really shouldn’t gloat on Twitter...

I fear we are about to witness something similar in politics. And we’re going to be the fall guys.

How do you think things will shake out? I fear that unlike today there’s not going to be any winners (financialised capital aside) and lots of losers

Genuinely, I think Brexit is has largely been a case of asymmetric warfare. Leo’s leading us all into an ambush.

I’d agree on the asymmetric warfare (with multiple asymmetries). What does the ambush look like? Feels like there’s an ambush for Ireland regardless: hard to see how ‘Global Britain’ sits alongside 2019 Ireland

The Brexiteers have been ahead of the rest of us ever since they took the referendum of 2016. Leo let himself be fooled that their determination to break free of the binding treaties which created Lisbon would somehow give is a winning hand. Turns out that was utter balls.

Was there an alternative position Ireland could have taken? Leo’s is same as Enda’s (and is same as Martin’s). Brexiters want out of CU and SM, which means irish border would always have been the issue it is now

2/ I suspect Leo only had his eye on the next general election and screwing over Martin and FF. He will have expected a diplomatic victory that would see FG stealing the former's republican credentials. I genuinely hope there was nothing more to it than that.

Very possible. But I’m not at all convinced that we wouldn’t have ended up here regardless of who was in charge in Dublin.

With much better diplomacy MV3 might have passed. People in Ireland don't realise just how obnoxious Leo comes across to us. Trust is everything and he oozes smarm. A maladoit chancer.
