I used to think I was against this kind of regulation, but now that I see these utterly blatant total bullshit beers … maybe I’m not against it any more.

Im a Brexiter and worked for a MEP. Against my better nature I'll happily help on this if you think it's worthwhile.

Talked to better-informed Lithuanian brewers: they were consulted on the brewing of this beer, but clearly their advice was not followed. This beer is basically a simple fake. People travel to Lithuania on my advice and then drink US pale ale because fakers fool them. Fuck that!

Unfortunately it's very easy to brew/cook/etc. something that misses the mark even if you follow all the written rules. How about a [short] list of what to drink and where? That would allow people to calibrate their tastes to authentic examples at their peak state.

Maybe also worth contacting BJCP? Less urgent but that's also important to disseminate the overall culture of the beer

IMHO BJCP is the reason that most beer styles in the US are "just wrong". People read the BJCP guidelines and extrapolate from them, maybe while tasting a stale imported bottle. I'm not saying they're making bad beers, just not what I was expecting based on the name.

I actually have used the guidelines in the past for my own education but even they admit it is a rough guide and more for the ease of judging than anything else.

I often fantasize about submitting beers from Forschungsbrauerei in Munich to competitions and having them shot down for "not being according to style". ... I have weird fantasies ;-)

Try 90% medium crystal malt and 10% distiller's malt as an infusion mash and get back to me ;) I made a fake keptinis with it but using Jovaru which is hard to floc. The taste was lovely though. I'll rebrew with K-97 as an Alt-type beer.

next up: crystal SMaSH

Alone you will need a very attenuating yeast and a lot of patience! Jovaru is diastitic and when some of my beers were real gushers when I first used it. It is definitely possible to SMaSH it but just remember the wort will be FULL of dextrins so get a high attenuator.
