Do powers exist for local authorities to levy taxes on property used for holiday lets? If not are they being contemplated at Holyrood?

Holyrood can reform council tax if it wishes to.

I know, and hopefully one day it will. But an ability for councils to charge a fee/tax on holiday lets would be a quick improvement on the current situation. More beneficial (I'd say) than the hotel room levy.

Why are houses not being built in these areas if there is clearly demand?

Too strict planning laws would be my theory, though finance will come into it too. I live in the Highlands where we have vast expanses of land, but a building plot will cost you £100k due to scarcity of supply.

Also, the demand is largely for cheap (affordable) housing. There's no incentive to build these if instead you can build and sell luxury second homes.

Housing ladder in reverse....cost of new housebuilding is high so far better to build more expensive and large houses and take this demand pressure from cheaper housing. The reverse sounds bizarre but it makes more sense and can be done without subsidy

I'm not against the housing ladder idea, but it's patently not working for many communities. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/apr/22/nothing-affordable-buying-home-now-just-dream-young-couples-older-workers-arran-tourism-booming …

works on mainland. On islands it is for sure quite different.

Try being a local in Plockton or St Ives. It's not only islands which have the problem.

Cornwall is FULL of derelict brownfield sites!
