Our NHS has a staffing crisis. I've seen the effect of the strain of that crisis first hand my whole life. We are choosing not to fund the training of doctors to fill those gaps. We're also squeezing junior doctors' pay. The last thing we need is to lose the doctors who come here

@JuliaHB1 The biggest squeeze by far has been EU driven. The EWTD cut rotas to 48 hours from 60. 20% loss of salary through banding cuts; you now need 25% more junior docs to staff the same rota as ten years ago. 25% higher pension and training costs.1 antwoord 2 retweets 1 vind-ik-leuk -

Cutting rotas was desirable 56 hrs is still worked by many but no one wants the 80-120 hrs worked when I qualified when an A unit of OT was paid at 1/3 of base rate and B units at 1/5 of base ; the good old days not.

56 or 60 was doable, no problem. 75 plus was very 90s and included sleeping on call

Though my generation saw and experienced more and the firm system was better for training than the current disjointed system

Yes, partly the new system is to jiggle the rota was fewer hours. Made a mess of everything.

Plus removing the mess which provided a live in mutual support system for everybody when on call one all us knew what the problems were because units functioned in a homogeneous fashion and one had a list of to dos from everyone rather than rushing around in the dark.
